Siberian haiku
June 1941. A quiet village in central Lithuania was disturbed by the appearance of the Soviet army. Little Algukas' family is given only ten minutes to gather before being put on a crowded freight train to the snow-covered plains of Siberia. Leaving their native fertile lands and the flow of rural life, they are forced to adapt to new harsh conditions, hunger and cold. Algukas learns to avoid daily difficulties through the power of his imagination, pencils, paper and a book of Japanese poems - haiku.
Based on her father's childhood story, writer Jürge Ville and artist Lina Itagaki set about depicting one of the darkest periods in European history. Seen through the eyes of a child, it becomes a hymn to the strength of human endurance and hope.
