Auschwitz. The final decision of the Nazis
Auschwitz is the place of one of the most cruel crimes of humanity. Historians are still debating about the number of people who died in the "death camp" - at the Nuremberg Trials, the terrible figure of 4 million was announced. Due to the destruction of part of the documents, its history has not been fully investigated, although more than 75 years have passed since the release of the concentration camp prisoners.
To create the book, Laurence Rees took about 100 unique interviews with eyewitnesses of the events. Thanks to conversations with surviving former prisoners, criminal guards and the study of archival materials, the author gives a comprehensive picture of what happened in the "death camp". Rhys argues that Auschwitz was never intended to exterminate the Jews, and that "the final solution of the Jewish question" was never considered its only task - although these two points later became its purpose of existence.
The book "Auschwitz" not only allows us to see a terrible miniature of an ideal society from the point of view of Nazism, but also gives us a chance to understand human nature in extreme conditions. And thanks to this awareness, we will be able to understand a lot about ourselves.
